Oh Deer! An Undectet* of Bambi's

From all the Disney charactersations, Bambi the deer is one of the most loved. The story of the young Bambi learning how to survive in the forest. His lessons are not only from his mother but also from two special friends, Thumper the rabbit and Flower the skunk. In 1942, feature animations were still in their infancy but you can see the quality of the work on the screen (my favourite scene is where Bambi learns to stand on the ice), just a brilliant episode in a brilliant film.

The story was based on a book called Bambi. Eine Lebensgeschichte aus dem Walde; (Bambi: A Life in the Woods) written by an Austrian called Felix Salten (1869 - 1945) in 1923. It was translated and released in America in 1928 which must be how Disney came to read it. It was a flop when first released, mainly because of the war and the fact that Disney could not place it into European cinemas. But, since then, it has gone from strength to strength. A sequel was written by the author, Bambis Kinder, eine Familie im Walde (Bambi's Children: A Family in the Forest) but Disney did not choose to make a second Bambi film.

Here are some boxes or title cards from Bambi games in my collection, those held by the HONG Dutch archive and those in the Rex Pitts Collection. Note that five of the games feature the same box image but I am showing each example (you can see that they are different editions if you check the detail) just in case one of you wants to collect every Bambi game.

I would like to add to this article (and that goes for every article where I feature a certain game or theme), so if any of you would like to submit such things to me, I would be very pleased to accept and add them (giving the donor due credit of course). Scans only please.
