New Acquisitions: November 2014

Another month goes by. When you are an old man like me, the years  pass by far too quickly. At least, it feels that way. Sigh!!!

My normal electic collection of new items this month. Which is not good says Dusa because she feels we have too many "dusty old games" already.  She is right but I just cannot pass a bargain by. In that regard, I picked up a 'library' of Chess books and magazines. The actual items in this collection numbered over 450! They are now on eBay Germany and seem to be generating a lot of interest but no-one has placed a bid yet. This may be because I am asking for them to be picked-up. They are so heavy, I could not even pick-up two of the boxes they arrived in. The parcel delivery man had to do that for me and carry them into our games room (where I am now as I type this).

Another unusual item arrived this month. The box appears in the images below. It was called 'Monopoly Note Holders and published by John Waddington. The box says 'Complete with extra Monopoly money for use in conjunction with the new game Monopoly. Set of 4 Holders complete with money. 2 shillings and 6 pence'.  It must have been an early marketing ploy. I can hear the Directors at the publisher's head office, "We seem to have a sensation with this game. How can we exploit the popularity?" And this item was the answer. A nice find for me and I suspect it may be very rare. Inside, the holders had long gone but the extra money is still there. That has not changed over the years except that the 500 pound notes are in a rather shrill white with red lettering. It also included the note (see left) which Monopoly fans might like to see.

A new Stefan Feld game was released this month. As I have said many times, we consider Feld to be a genius so we eagerly buy anything he has designed. The new game is Aquasphere and is very complicated for a Feld game. However, after the first game, you can see how your strategy might develop. The science fiction theme doesn't help. It gives the impression that it is more complex where a game set in, for example, medieval times, seems easier. However, I also found a copy of an older Feld game called Um Ru(h)m & Ehre. The name translates as Glory & Fame but the letter H in Ruhm has been put in brackets as a sort of pun. If you take the H away it says 'Rum & Fame' and this fits to the theme because it is about pirates and no-one loves a tot of rum more than pirates. The game is wonderful so do not pass it by if you spot a copy for sale.

And now to the games…..
