New Acquisitions: January 2015

I hope you all have recovered after indulging in Christmas and New Year. Here at Chez-Osten, all is well. We have joined another Bridge club so we are now playing three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday).

Jürgen gave me a nice birthday present, Doe Schlösser des König Ludwig. It seemed to me that it was one of the highest rated new games at Essen 2014. I hope it justifies such acclaim. My problem is that the designer is Ted Alspach. Usually his games do not 'hit the spot' for me. Last year I did try his game Suburbia and, I am sad to say, it was dull with a capital D. But others rave over Suburbia so I am not marching to the popular beat of his style of games. The King Ludwig game is being compared to Suburbia, as being similar in mechanics but vastly better. In his latest game players are creating the layout of a castle for the mad king. Players score points for various rooms added to their castle. This seems to be lighter in theme, in short, more fun. Fingers crossed!

If any readers are Chess fans, I hace acquired a huge library of magazines and books. If you want such a collection, it will cost €399 and is available for pick-up from this house (much to big to send in the post but I am happy to do so if you are prepared to pay for despatch).

Two reference books have been sent to me this month. First is a wonderful Garman book by my close friend Rudolf Rühle. For my money Rudolf is easily the best expert on games in this country. He has great personal knowledge of all German games and he specialises in former East German games. The book is packed with photographs of games from his collection. The second book is a massive tome from Malcolm Watkins, the UK's specialist expert on games by Roberts Brothers, a company who also had the trading name of Glevum. I am led to understand that his personal Glevum collection is the most complete in the world. As with Rudol's book, there are hundreds of pictures and scans from Malcolm's collection. I am told that the book is available on Amazon but at a huge price. Trust me, if you have an interest in pre-war British games, splash out the money. Now to this month's new acquisitions........
