New Acquisitions: August 2015

After a major re-adjustment I have restored the problems of last month. You may have noticed that I didn't give the game information under each picture of my new games. My designer and I could not find a reason other than I had downloaded Windows 10 and something in that change caused the problem. Fingers crossed that it works this month.

Helga and I were discussing the games in our collection that were designed by Stefan Feld. I nominated Aquasphere (Feld's most recent game) as the worst game, one that I would be very happy not to play again. Helga disagreed and said that her bottom choice would be Amerigo. I kind of agreed with her that it was not one of his best. Now we picked our favourite games and, for me, it has to be Trajan. This is just a wonderful game and I rate it as his masterpiece. The different elements marry together so well that each game you can play this way or that way. The victory points scored are very balanced. For example, if you play a military tactic you may win. But if you were to employ craftsmen, yes, that may work. Or you could be a merchant and earn pots of points by selling your goods abroad. Or you might go into politics and rule the Senate, lots of points ban be earned there. And there are other ways points can be scored and you must never neglect what the people want (Bread or Circuses come to mind) because if you do, there are lots of points to be lost. If SPI or Avalon Hill had made a game with this theme then it would take at least 6 hours to play but Feld's take on the theme takes 2 hours maximum to play. In fact, Avalong Hill did do such a game, Republic of Rome. I bet not one of you can honestly say that you have played that game and finished it correctly. I can remember my first game of it. It was at Derek Carver's house and Mathias Hardel (now the esteemed editor of Spiel Box magazine) was a guest and he raved over the game. So we sat down and waited to be amazed. Well we were amazed!! But for the wrong reasons. What amazed us what we only managed around 4 turns each before time ran out and we were all (except Mathias, who loved such games) desperate for one of Brenda's suppers. It was such a shame, I really wanted to like the game. I even bought it myself. I took the shrink-wrap off, punched out all the counters and read the rules. I put all the counters back into the box and they were never seen again. Sigh!

Now, back to Helga's choice of the best Feld game. She has picked Brügge which I agree that it is a lovely game. It has immense replayability as one third of the cards are never used so you have no guarantee if your favourites will turn up and if they do, will you get them. Again, lots of different ways to earn points. We both tend to look at our start hand of characters and then pick a route based on their skills. OK, I know critics say that there is too much luck but it is that which makes it such fun. Helga thought it was marginally that Burgünd, our first Stefan Feld purchase. Jürgen was not present in our discussion but he would have picked Gurbünd as well.

We had to give some notable near-misses to being the best:

Die Speicherstadt: The game of Hamburg merchants. Get the expansion because that improves the game enormously.

Um Ru(h)m und Erde: A lightweight game of pirates but has much more depth than you might imagine on reading the rules.

Both of these games are out of print I believe. We certainly had a lot of difficulty in getting the pirate game but definitely worth it in the end.

Many thanks go to Jürgen and Gretel for their help and games. Now to August's games that have entered through the portals of Chez Kirchweg....
